We’ve gotten a lot of feedback from folks – they would like us to explain clearly how to get their first tutor client. So we’re going to work on that over the next few days. It will probably take us seven posts or so to explain the things you’ll need to get that first student. I suggest you take each days content and do it. When you’re complete move on to the next day and so forth.
Step 1 – you’ll want to make sure you have a market in your area. If there is no market then you can stop. Personally I think if there is a school near where you live then you have a market. A reminder you can tutor anything you’re passionate about. It doesn’t have to be 3rd grade math but it could be something like –
Music – whether it be piano, guitar or something far more exotic like harp, dulcimer, banjo etc., people pay to learn how to play a musical instrument. These steps we outline can help you get your first music student.
Art – people love to draw and paint. Teaching someone to do this well again can be an idea for you to base your tutoring around. You can start with something simple and go from there. This would also be an excellent idea for teaching several students at once (group tutoring).
Dance – ballet, modern, jazz, traditional, ballroom or any other type of dance. Anything that can be learned you could teach it.
Personal finance – teach people how to save money, reduce debt, save for college. Some ideas for this could be hold a class for a fee with many students, then offer individual tutoring for people that want additional instruction. Another way you could market this would be to have a free class and then offer the additional instruction for a fee. You could use this method no matter what you’re teaching or tutoring.
Business building –
Resume writing –
Languages – think ESL – English as a second language is a thriving segment in the tutoring world. There are a variety of reasons why people need this.
Getting a Job – in this economy many people have lost their job and are looking for another one. Teaching them the best way to do this, the pitfalls to avoid, and the strategies to use is not only needed now but in the future as well. Think college students.
Hopefully you’re getting the idea that you don’t have to tutor 3rd grade math. While we focus in our guides on how to teach school subjects you can adapt it to fit almost anything that you would like to teach.
You’ll want to make sure you review some of the things we’ve already written about finding out (making sure) you have a market where you live. You can find those things at the following urls –

Next we’ll talk about some preparations you’ll want to do before you start your business.

This is some good information on how to begin – ASAP! I have a love for education, but am a broker by nature. This module seems to fit my nature! I am so glad I ran past the clever apple. Please don’t stop doing what you are doing. 🙂
