Teaching with Google Hangouts –
There are many different ways that you teach, today we’ll talk about one of them, next Thursday we’ll talk about another and have a video so you can see how both of them work.
If you’re teaching something that people can learn from watching you do it, then you’ll want to have a video camera for your computer. You can buy one from Amazon, Wal-mart and many other places. You can spend as little as $20 and prices go into the hundreds of dollars. If you have a laptop, then you probably have a video camera (and microphone) built in.
Let’s say your tutoring people on how to crochet. You’ll want to set up the camera so you can talk and they can see what you’re doing with the crochet hook. Test things out to find where you want your camera and the lighting that you want to use. You can use a simple light pointed at your lap when you get started, as you build and grow your business you can add better lighting to things that you want to buy.
Since you’re doing a hangout, you want to make sure that you’re students also have a camera. You want to explain to them before they purchase your class, to get the most out of it, they’ll want a camera. As you do your projects, you’ll want to watch them as they work on their own. You’ll want to give them tips and hints on how to do whatever they’re doing better. The more interactive you are with them, the better they’ll like the class and the more likely they’ll be to continue to be your student.
My wife teaches like this, what she does is teach the students a new stitch, doing it slow and explaining every step. Her students are able to watch her. Then she asks each student in the class to put themselves on camera. The first time it can take awhile to get everything adjusted, but after you’ve been doing it for awhile it becomes second nature both to you and your students.
Here are some tips for teaching with the video camera.
