Welcome to March. Before we talk about weather related emergencies I just wanted to make sure you had some items included in your packet you give your students and their parents. You’ll want to make sure you include instructions on:
1. When you won’t be tutoring. Give them instructions on how make up work is made.
2. How they can contact you if they need to cancel their tutor session.
3. If you offer programs during missed days of school. This can be an additional money maker for you.
4. How you handle emergencies. You’ll want to get permission slips / emergency forms filled out.
5. How you contact them / how they find out if tutoring for the day has been canceled.
Preparing for Emergencies (weather)
We talked on Monday about some general preparedness tips. You can check that out here

Today we’re going to talk a bit about weather related emergencies.
Winter – this winter has been pretty easy for us, but many areas of the country have been hit pretty hard. If you know a blizzard is coming you can change tutor days and times around. I mentioned earlier that you need to be weather aware. An easy way to keep up with this is to watch the weather segments for you local news every day. You can also watch the weather channel and pay attention to the local forecast.
You also want to make sure your clients know it isn’t worth risking their lives to attend a tutor session. This is one of the best reasons to have an online tutoring plan. You can make up the time missed online without anyone having to leave home.
Spring / Summer – the time for severe storms. For major storms you’ll usually have tornado warnings. We had a severe weather outbreak in our area last year. We had several days warning and it was all over the local news. If you know one of these is going to happen then I’ve found it best just to cancel the tutoring sessions for the day.
You should make a plan for if something happens during a tutor session. You should also make sure that you go over a plan with each student for what happens if there is a tornado or other type of severe weather. This is also one of the reasons you want to make sure you have a weather radio.
We’ve included some additional weather related links below. Including how to keep track of the weather and what to do in case of a tornado.
